Matt Yates was born in Jacksonville, Florida and raised in Jacksonville Beach. Since his youth he has enjoyed the craft of writing, and though he has no formal education in literature, he writes as often as he can. His early influences were that of the "Beat" writers, especially Jack Kerouac and William S. Burroughs, to which he credits his love for "word-smithing". Currently he resides in Fernandina Beach, Florida, with his wife and children.

A Walk

I walk on the beach with hands deep in my pockets.
I pull out my half pint of Jim Beam.
I stop where I am and take a hard pull on the liquor.
With my head tilted up I can see pefectly the shining moon.
He is smiling down at me.
I stare at him for a bit, and smile back.
Then softly he whispers into my ear,
"Your company is cheap."

Snow Globe

The day breaks and shatters into the people.
The moon slips and sinks into the ocean while the sun leaves to court Mars.
Waves crash into the side of the sky.
Clouds form sidewalks into the heavens.
People are scared.
The planets re-align into fragments of their former selves.
Has God dropped the jar?
